Case Description:

34 yo female returned traveler from Nigeria presents with fever, vomiting, and headache. She seizes and lapses into a coma. She exhibits seizures, coma, and acidosis and manifestations of severe malaria.

Cerebral Malaria Severe Acidosis

Setting:

Simulation laboratory set up as ED resuscitation room

Equipment:

METI ECS or other comparable high-fidelity simulation manikin

Actors:

1) Nurse (radio-wired to lead instructor as in-scenario facilitator) 2) EKG tech, X-Ray tech, respiratory therapist, and pharmacist (all may be played by same person) 3) Patient: voice only from control room (this may be the same person as #2, but this is more challenging)

Usage Details:

For successful resolution of the case, the patient requires prompt empiric treatment with anti-malarial medications and appropriate supportive care, including intubation.
