In atrial fibrillation, multiple impulses travel through the atria at
the same time. Instead of a coordinated contraction, the atria quivers,
or fibrillates. Irregular impulses reach the AV node in rapid succession,
but due to the conductive nature of the node, not all impulses are transmitted.
This irregular transmission results in an irregular pulse and sometimes
a sensation of fluttering in the chest.
